Bystander catches driver after reported hit-and-run near March Air Reserve Base

A witness who saw someone fleeing what authorities described as a hit-and-run that left two vehicles overturned near March Air Reserve Base captured the man and held him for officers on Tuesday, July 7.

The collision between a Toyota car and a Ford Escape was reported at 4:20 p.m. on the Cactus Avenue offramp from the southbound 215 Freeway in the county area on the Riverside/Moreno Valley border.

“Suspect last seen running up the offramp at Cactus,” the CHP log says. “Per witness, driver of one vehicle jumped out of front window and ran off freeway. Male with a white shirt and dark pants.”

A witness told the CHP that the Toyota driver was driving recklessly and caused the collision and that the Toyota driver ran away, according to the log.

But a “Good Sam(aritan)” told Cal Fire that another person had detained that driver, the log said.

A woman in one of the cars was unable to answer questions, according to the log. There were no additional details available Tuesday on injuries or the man who reportedly fled.
