USC QB Kedon Slovis named Pac-12 offensive freshman of year; three Trojans named to first team

USC quarterback Kedon Slovis was named the Pac-12 offensive freshman of the year on Tuesday, putting a cap on his first collegiate season.

Slovis was the backup entering the season but was pressed into duty by an injury to start JT Daniels in the season opener. After feeling his way through the second half of that win over Fresno State, Slovis came into his own.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native threw for 3,242 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 71.8% of his passes. He threw nine interceptions, but only one in the final three weeks of the season as he threw for more than 400 yards in each contest, the first Trojan to accomplish that three-game feat.

In the regular-season finale against UCLA, Slovis broke the USC single-game record with 515 passing yards, the only Trojan QB to surpass the 500-yard mark in a game.

Slovis finished the season ranked 19th in passing yards and tied for 16th in passing TDs despite missing most of two games with a concussion. He is the fourth Trojan to be named the conference’s offensive freshman of the year, and first since Sam Darnold in 2016.

He wasn’t the only Trojan honored Tuesday as the All-Pac-12 teams were announced.

Three USC players were named to the All-Pac-12 first team: Receiver Michael Pittman Jr., offensive tackle Austin Jackson and defensive tackle Jay Tufele.

Pittman, a senior, is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award after catching 95 passes for 1,222 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. He previously made the All-Pac-12 first team in 2017 for his special teams work, and was named to the conference’s second team this year as an all-purpose player.

Jackson started every game at left tackle as a junior, his second season as a starter. Tufele, a sophomore, recorded 38 tackles this season with 6.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection as a freshman.

The Trojans were also well-represented on the All-Pac-12 second team, with guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, defensive end Drake Jackson, safety Talanoa Hufanga and kickoff returner Velus Jones Jr. being honored.

USC placed six players on the conference’s honorable mention list: Slovis, LB John Houston Jr., WR Tyler Vaughns, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, CB Olaijah Griffin and kicker Chase McGrath.
