DJ Smokey Smoke’s Memorial Day Weekend House-Hunting Playlist

DJ Smokey Smoke’s Memorial Day Weekend House-Hunting Playlist

DJ Smokey Smoke, a.k.a. realtor.com chief economist Jonathan Smoke, at the DJ booth.

Spring is off and running, housing starts are up 20% over March, and it’s time for just the right playlist to go with a hot market and a beautiful three-day weekend to shop for homes. That’s how a music-obsessed real estate economist sees it, anyway. This week’s list is inspired by current hits, current movies, sports, and, of course, real estate.

1. ‘The Way We See the World,’ by Afrojack, Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike & NERVO

This track from the movie “Tomorrowland” is a great way to start your Memorial Day weekend—and your home search—in control of your own destiny. With prices, rents, and mortgage rates expected to be higher in the future, this is a great time to be “in command” of your housing costs and build wealth through homeownership.

2. ‘This Summer’s Gonna Hurt,’ by Maroon 5

I selected the clean version, uh-huh. Maroon 5 performed this song live on Tuesday’s season finale of “The Voice.” This Memorial Day is likely the beginning of a new chapter for many new homeowners. My wife and I closed on our first home the Friday before Memorial Day exactly 20 years ago. I’ll never forget the feeling that day—nervously signing papers and finally getting the keys.

Please, Mr. Postman

Send me news, tips, and promos from realtor.com® and Move.

To shoppers just starting out, the journey of buying a home is a bit of an emotional roller coaster. You search high and low, you go through a lot of short-term hassle with contracts, inspections, appraisals, and escrows, but in the end, the pain is so worth it, uh-huh.

3. ‘Crazy Youngsters,’ by Ester Dean

Shoutout to Elizabeth Banks, the new spokeswoman for realtor.com® and director of “Pitch Perfect 2,” which slayed the competition at the box office last weekend. This is my favorite original song on that soundtrack, and it could be the theme song for all the millennials who are just now entering the housing market. Those crazy 21- to 34-year-olds are looking at real estate big-time. Their traffic in April across all real estate sites grew more than 30% over last year, and more than half of them were looking at real estate online in April.

I hope you truly believe that the fun has just begun. You do have a lot of things to do ahead of you, but I believe you will do just fine. Stay on realtor.com—you won’t find more complete, accurate, or timely listings elsewhere.

4. ‘Survival of the Fittest 2′ (ESPN remix), by Mobb Deep

This remix is for the NBA playoffs, so it’s fitting to do a shoutout to Cleveland, Atlanta, Houston, and Sacramento. If only the strong survive, from a housing perspective the East is a toss-up, but Sacramento is one of the hottest housing markets. I would bet on the Warriors.

5. ‘Homegrown,’ by Zac Brown Band

This feel-good country crossover speaks to the things that matter most: family and friends. This weekend, take the time to remember those who gave their lives to protect our right to the pursuit of happiness. And if you have a little piece of land in the countryside, be extra happy!

6. ‘You Know You Like It,’ by DJ Snake & AlunaGeorge

This song is tracking up the charts, and it’s a fitting end to the Memorial Day selections for choosing your own course and destiny. Looking for your dream home this spring can be cruel, given the tight supply, but keep at it. Keep dreaming, do your mortgage homework, and find a way to make your dreams happen.
