It’s No Joke: Take This $140K Tiny House in the Catskills, Please

It’s No Joke: Take This 0K Tiny House in the Catskills, Please

Cozy Catskills Cabin

Think Catskills, and the borscht belt undoubtedly comes to mind. Namely, the family resorts of the midcentury that filled up every summer with Jewish New Yorkers entertained by comedians on the hotel circuit in upstate New York. And what a lineup: Jack Benny, Woody Allen, Joan Rivers, and, of course, Henny Youngman.

These days, the hotels of yesteryear are mostly shuttered. But the area is still a draw for Manhattanites. New York City is a drivable 2.5 hours away. And this tiny home, on the market in Grahamsville, NY, is the perfect getaway. The listing has been a popular rental on Airbnb. For the low, low price of $ 139,500, you might be tempted to snap up the retreat for yourself and tap into this revenue stream.

“The Catskills were popular then and popular now for different reasons,” listing agent Jim Allred says.

As for now, comedy has given way to communing with nature. “The main draw is the natural beauty, the mountains,” Allred says. Outdoor activities include hiking, biking, swimming, and canoeing on the many local waterways.

The one-bedroom country cabin offers plenty of perks. The 420-square-foot structure built in 1959 has “nothing left in the house that resembles 1959,” Allred points out. Every part of the home has been renovated since then—from an outdoor porch, wood siding, new windows and doors, to an additional loft for an extra sleeping area.

The tiny home’s oversize windows are key for taking in the mountain views, which are visible “all around the house,” Allred says. “It’s a very special little spot.”

This rural retreat, although easily accessible to the road, sits on 3 acres and is surrounded by woods. “It’s pretty private. The property backs up to state-owned land that gives it a protected boundary,” Allred says.

While the cabin is an all-season getaway, and could possibly house year-round residents, coming in the winter months is “not for the faint of heart,” Allred says, noting the abundance of snow that blankets the area during winter.

Like generations before them, many make the schlep during the warmer months.

The owners, who have seen a steady stream of investment income from the place, have received glowing reviews from guests.

One writes that the home “was wonderfully laid out and felt really spacious despite the small footprint.”

Another adds, “There was so much beautiful natural light and large windows, but a real feeling of seclusion and away from it all.”

But, it’s not completely remote—shopping and dining in nearby Claryville, NY, is just 15 minutes away. “You can do a lot of everything or you can do a lot of nothing,” Allred says.

Given the weak cellphone signal mentioned on Airbnb, we recommend kicking back on the porch and doing a whole lot of nothing. And that’s no joke.
