Tiny House Exterior

Next to the tiny home on 13989 Long Gulch Trail in Littleton, CO, a Phoenix totem pole stands guard. For owners Kristen Moeller and  David Cottrell, this small house rose from the ashes.

The couple had previously lived in a cabin on the 36-acre property since 2003. However in 2012, Moeller was forced to flee with their two dogs and a cat, and not much else, to escape the flames from the Lower North Fork Fire. Their home burned to the ground.

“The dogs and the cat went in the car first. And then the computer. It was a very fast decision. There’s lots of stuff I would have grabbed in hindsight,” Moeller says.

Most people make the choice to downsize into a tiny home. For this couple, the choice was made for them. With few possessions but an enduring love for the land, the two opted to rebuild. This time, they went small.

Last summer, the two constructed the 772-square-foot home together with help from a Cabin Fever custom kit, and then appeared on A&E’s “Tiny House Nation.”

Since then, the couple decided to move on from tiny life and from their property. “In the two years since the fire, we had changed,” Moeller says. “We wanted to move to a new town and really start over.”

Listed for $ 490,000, the home is a “tiny, luxury mansion,” she says. They installed new solar panels, radiant heat, a gourmet kitchen, and marble countertops.

The two-story cabin includes a lofted bedroom and two offices. There’s even enough space for their Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Tigger and Roscoe.

The retreat takes full advantage of the phenomenal landscape. Located on the side of a mountain, the views are “breathtaking,” listing agent Dania Guth says.

We have to agree, it’s not bad.

The home, which Guth says offers “lots of land, privacy, and incredible views,” could work as a vacation spot. Or, for a heartier soul, a year-round residence. It is about about 30 minutes from Denver. But being at the very end of a snowy road in the middle of winter isn’t for everyone.

Moeller says this home means more than an address or a getaway. She says they’re “seeking not just qualified buyers but future stewards of the lands, people who will cherish it as we have. That place was a sanctuary and a true home to us.”
