Age: 58

Job: Executive chairman, CalAtlantic Group

Bio: After getting his MBA from UCI, Stowell began his career in the housing industry as a product development guru for the Irvine Co. He was recruited by Standard Pacific Homes in 1986 and, after that, steadily rose through the ranks. Stowell also works with HomeAid America, and he’s on the advisory boards for UC Berkeley’s Fisher Center for Real Estate and the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. He lives in San Juan Capistrano.

Why he’s an influencer: In February, Stowell, then chief executive of Standard Pacific, began talking with Larry Nicholson, chief executive at Ryland Homes, about a merger. On Oct. 1, the new company, CalAtlantic, began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The Irvine-based company is the nation’s fourth biggest homebuilding company, with operations in 17 states.

Biggest challenge: Navigating the turbulent waters of the worst housing recession since the Great Depression.

Work philosophy: ”Find your passion; seek meaning in it.”

Thoughts on homebuilding: “The aspiration of ‘home’ transcends all cultures and people. I believe homebuilding serves a fundamental human need.”

Inspiration: “I’m a passionate person by nature. I find inspiration in unexpected places and in unexpected people. I’m anxious for what will inspire me next.”

What’s next: “Integration of two companies into one. And beginning the brand transition of each of our communities to CalAltlantic.”
